Unlike the first three of this series, each of which is more than it seems at first, I knew Black John would be tough. The author includes some warnings about subjects, or a note, really. She didn't mention serious self-loathing, perhaps because by this point the reader strongly suspects that already. But how John reached this point? Oh boy. And about that: I appreciated the way Lane constructed this story, with memories laced through current events rather than breaking action for a separate flashback. The way those memories and the current terror/interest are woven together works beautifully. And when John re-integrating with his friends back in Sacramento, Lane ties the four stories together and it is beautiful. And then, the end.

Sigh.

Chase, Dex, Ethan, and John. These are great stories, and now I have to wait for the next one, darn it.

My Review:

The Johnnies series has been one of my favorites in the m/m fiction world, but I wasn't sure about this one. John is the owner of the porn company and he's done some pretty awful things, especially to Dex. But like all the guys in this series, John has some serious baggage in his background which makes him pretty broken.

This book centers around John and his childhood friend Tory. They were inseparable since they were 8 years old. They discovered their sexuality together and John's first porn company came from their relationship. They certainly didn't have a normal background and both were very broken souls because of their impossible childhood. John focused his brokenness into his porn business. Tory focused his into self-abuse and drugs. They loved each other, but it wasn't enough. When the book starts, John is in rehab where he learns about Tory's suicide. This book is a journey through the healing that John has to go through because of that. It's... Read more

this was dark and painful. it was full of snark. it ripped out my heart. I'm a fast reader but this one, I read slowly, re-read paragraphs and chapters, paused in thought, and hi-lighted sentences and paragraphs (not something I do). I grieved for these babies, for the lack of love and lost dreams. I was appalled by what these young men did to each other, the damage inflicted, the demons, the anger, the porn and oh god the self destructive drugs. My heart flew off that bridge and nearly cracked in two. I had cautious hope that the 'Faith - Galen had asked him to have faith. It seemed that phone call by phone call and text by text, one day, on moment, one beat in life's rhythm at a time, he'd built him up some of that', would work out and that there would be a life for John. A well earned, I am a good person, I deserve love, happiness and friends life. The ending? Oh how I smiled for John, and was grateful for a peak into how the Johnnies boys are doing. Thank you Amy for another... Read more
